How Do We Choose Our Identity? A Revealed Preference Approach Using Food Consumption

Are identities fungible? How do people come to identify with specific groups? This paper proposes a revealed preference approach, using food consumption uncover ethnic and religious identity choices in India. We first show that of goods (e.g. beef pork) responds forces suggested by social-identity research: group status salience, the latter proxied inter-group conflict. Moreover, respond cost following group’s prescribed behaviors. propose estimate modified demand system quantify changes followed India’s 1991 economic reforms. Notably, our estimated correlate vote shares for parties. While research has focused on results suggest costs also play an important role.
